love goes to a pterodactyl on fire

along my thrice weekly 2 hour brisk walk through the local neighborhood park (right across the street and it's huge) i often look up into the trees to catch a glimpse of the 'art birds' that some anonymous kind soul has placed at random intervals along the various hilly foot paths.

years back mavis first noticed the rather large painted-on-wood artifacts. she recognized an archeopteryx (she had, oddly enough, just done a report for her 2nd grade project), a bluejay, an eagle and the pterodactyl (there are now 2 arheopteryx, a hawk, a thunderbird and a couple of odd as yet uncatergoriseable avians). no credit anywhere, no fanfare, no local coverage, no google finds. and that's kind of nice. most park users don't even see them until pointed out. mavis delights in doing that.

the birds just pop up and make the viewing that much more interesting.

mavis and i like to imagine that this artist is a woman and uses the cover of night to climb the trees and make her installation. i kind of hope that we never find out.

i just love the pterodactyl in particular. cheers me up and gives me a boost when i'm down. the ancient creature perched up on high encourages me to think of all the things i could be doing to make just somebody smile.

as i stroll, i find myself occasionally worrying that some kind of fire might destroy parts of the park (it has happened before) and i worry about the birds. the art birds. i can't really see myself climbing up a tree as the fire rages at me. and i can't believe that the artist hadn't considered this when placing these objects for us to enjoy.

then i realize that the ephemeral nature of this project would allow for all that, and for some reason this brings me further joy.

so much time, so little to see

been gone a bit, i know...sorry 'bout that, but so much has gone on.

first off, moved to a new place and have a roommate for the first time in years (wives don't count, different order of living status).

secondly, was fired from the union gig on the same day that i was going to quit...suffice to say that my pleas of "i'm doing the work of 2 or 3 people" went unheeded. not to mention the creepy passive aggressive "rep" that decided to scream at me in the office for something she didn't do well, after months of dodging her clients...well! just typical non-profit crap.

third(ly?), the one year anniversary of my mental meltdown came and went, and i needed some very important self-reflection and flagellation.

and lastly, the divorce was finalized. dragged on, but now done. weird.

*********

two great things, and somewhat interconnected:

the romance with beth is going well. we are stronger than ever, and we have passed the "meet the family" hurdles. beth fretted and fretted about the meets, bless her. no one has ever fretted so on my account, in a positive way.

mavis was sad at first (daddy has a girlfriend?) but our relationship is so strong that we have been able to talk on all aspects, and she likes beth, to boot. they even baked a pie together, and mavis quizzes beth about superheroes and religion and asked me on the bart in oakland if beth and i were going to be married.

told her we were thinking about it, and if we did, would she be my best man.

"daddy, i'm not a man. how about 'best person'?"

my two ladies. i am a fortunate man.

*********

also, on top of an indifferent cat and a skittish parrot, my roommate got a tiny little dog from the pound. terrier mix of some sort, scared of the world and a probably abused 2 year old sniffer that likes corn chips. various scars and deer in headlights flinching indicate a rough time was had.

amazing stress reliever. and some one so battered by life that i can relate. we get along just fine.
